The grand illusion of an economy not grown on the proliferation and the just distribution of goods, but on financial speculation ended in closed cartons of managers of Manhattan forced to leave office in disarmament.
The end of a long cycle that the Eighty years on, had accelerated the race to make money with money or at least with the promise that they came from. We would have expected, we would need, the best intellectual minds and energies coolest, wisest of the vision to reinvent a new beginning. Not the recovery in consumption, not only. First, a project for the production and work, drawing a long period that gave the Italians a horizon of certainty.
We had the social card instead. A lot of propaganda and a few crumbs that our readers (and us with them) immediately judged cumbersome and essentially useless. It was in fact used very little. The poor remained poor, and many others are now. We had all the more depressing and grotesque political season that we could imagine. Managed by the end of empire, title not long ago when the head of government, overwhelmed by his private lifestyle, made explicit an imperial vocation wholly inadequate to the times, locations and even to his own great power.
It was a year of Guys and Dolls while Italy slipped back losing quantity and quality in work, school, health, ability to integrate and plan the future. A year of trials of strength and those playing smarter, quicker to escape and make the wave.
